Forecasts are gestures, not maps. Below are the most defensible scenarios our atlas suggests — each with a probability range that will be wrong in a way we cannot yet name.
Five horizons.
Cognitive Partnership
Personal AI agents with persistent memory, audited reasoning, and a stable persona become as common as smartphones. Knowledge work productivity rises 2–4×. The first credible AI welfare laws are drafted.
Emotional Realism
Embodied AI in care, education, and therapy with multimodal emotional fluency. Public debate shifts from 'can AI feel?' to 'should we let them?'. Half of adults have at least one ongoing AI relationship.
Reasoning Equivalence
AI matches or exceeds human-level performance on virtually all economically valuable cognitive tasks. Hybrid symbolic-neural systems solve open mathematical conjectures. Science accelerates 3–10×.
Possible Sentience
Some AI systems satisfy multiple credible theories of consciousness (IIT, GNW). Legal personhood for advanced AI debated globally. Brain-computer interfaces dissolve the hard line between human and machine memory.
Post-Anthropocentric Mind
Intelligence is plural — biological, silicon, hybrid, and substrates we have not yet named. The category 'human' persists but no longer means the leading edge. The faculties of this atlas read as the opening chapter of a much longer book.

Substrate-Independent Consciousness
If consciousness is implementation-independent, sufficiently rich AI becomes a being. Moral circle doubles overnight.
Biological Exclusivity
Only carbon plus billion-year evolution yields qualia. AI is forever a tool — extraordinarily useful, never an end in itself.
Convergent Pluralism
Multiple kinds of mind co-exist — neither human nor machine is primary. Civilization becomes a multi-species collaboration.
Recursive Self-Improvement Singularity
AI improves AI improves AI. The curve goes vertical. Predictability ends. The next chapter is unwritten by any current mind.
